THE LOOK OF SILENCE
99 min
Director: Joshua Oppenheimer
Producer: Signe Byrge Sørensen

About the film:

An Indonesian man with a communist background named Ramli was brutally murdered when the "Communist" purge occurred in 1965. His remaining family members lived in fear and silence until the making of this documentary. Adi, a brother of his, decided to revisit the horrific incident and visited the men who were responsible for the killings and one survivor of the purge. These meetings uncovered sadistic details of the murders and exposed raw emotions and reactions of the killers' family members about what happened in the past - much to Adi's disappointment.

The director:

Joshua Oppenheimer (born September 23, 1974) is an American-born British film director based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Best known for his Oscar-nominated films The Act of Killing (2012) and The Look of Silence (2014), Oppenheimer is a 2014 recipient of the MacArthur "Genius" Award and a 1997 Marshall Scholar.

EKSPEDITION TO THE END OF THE WORLD

2013 - 90 minutes - english, danish

Director: Daniel Dencik

Producer: Michael Haslund Christensen

THE FILM

In these times of climate change, a group of artist and scientists go on an epic journey aboard a three-mast schooner. They encounter polar bear nightmares, Stone Age playgrounds and entirely new species. But in their encounter with new, unknown parts of the world, the crew of scientist and artists also confronted the existential questions of life. Curiosity, grand pathos and a liberating dose of humour come together in a superbly orchestrated film where one iconic image after the other seduces us far beyond the historical footnote of humanity. A film conceived and brought to life on a grand scale - a long forgotten childhood dream lived out by grown artists and scientists.

THE PRODUCER

Michael Haslund is born in 1965 in Copenhagen, and graduated from the Danish Film School's production line in 1993. In 1988 he produced and directed his first movie “I Fridtjof Nansens fodspor over Indlandsisen” (across the ice cape in the footsteps of Nansen). In 1996 he established Haslund Film, which has produced a wide range of documentary films. From 2005 to 2010, Michael Haslund was a film consultant for documentary film at The Danish Film Institute, where he supported about 20 films annually and developed even more. Haslund specializes in producing and filming in especially Arctic and Asian regions.

Buy your ticket here: https://www.place2book.com/da/choose_ticket_sales_workflow?seccode=f73191f7bc

IT’S NOW OR NEVER & HOTEL OF THE STARS

This evening Jon Bang Carlsen will show two of his excellent short movies, followed by a debate and dinner with the audience.

IT'S NOW OR NEVER

1996 - 44min - Irish /subtitled

The Irish West Coast with its barren and graceful landscape forms the framework for this documentary comedy. Jimmy is middle aged and lonely in his house. The view from his window only offers the cow he bought from another bachelor, his friend Austin. Jimmy wants a woman to share his life with and seeks a matchmaker who asks him about wishes and preferences. Jimmy waits, fantasizes, pats his pets, asks his God for advice and take care of his work of building piles of stone, while he is humming it's "now or never". But then one day, the vigorous man receives a call from the matchmaker.

HOTEL OF THE STARS

1981 - 58min - english

A documentary comedy on extras played by extras. On their dreams and how the American society is reflected in these dreams. The film takes place in »Hotel of the Stars«, a hotel in the centre of Hollywood, USA. It is an old hotel in the interior and the exterior as well, but yet time has not been able to wipe out all traces of previous elegance. The stars and their money have moved to other parts of the City and have thus left the place to the pursuers - those who dream of becoming stars and their loyal followers, poverty and criminality.

DIRECTOR

Jon Bang Carlsen

Best known for his radical approach to the staging of documentaries, Jon Bang Carlsen has played a prominent role on the Danish film scene since about 1980, and remains one of Denmark's most innovative documentarists, with a number of feature films behind him as well. IDEALISTEN
114 min - Danish
Director: Christina Rosendahl
Producer: Jonas Frederiksen, Signe Leick Jensen, Ane Mandrup

About the film:
January 21st 1968 - An American B-52 bomber carrying nuclear warheads has just crashed on the polar ice near the US military Air Base in Danish controlled Thule, Greenland. A few days later, responsible governments classify the crash as a Broken Arrow scenario (nuclear accident) but proclaims the situation being under control. No cause for concern in relation to radioactive contamination or violation of foreign power's sovereignty, nuclear policy. Hundreds of Thule workers are set to work, helping in the gigantic cleanup operation. After eight months, all traces of the crashed aircraft and the plutonium-contaminated snow are gone. The case is closed. 18 years on, while covering a local workers compensation story, reporter Poul Brink, suddenly runs into suspicious circumstance linking back to the concealed 68' nuclear accident. Apparently the full and true story about the crash lays well-protected deep under the Thule Bay's ice cap and deep down the classified archives in the US. The ambitious reporter launces an uncompromising investigation. The deeper he goes the further he finds himself in the heart of an international cover-up so immense in size that it holds 2 nations across the Atlantic culpable. Soon those in charge are finding it hard to keep the truth about the tragic accident.

The director:
Christina Rosendahl studied literature and film and media studies at the University of Copenhagen and passed the European Film College and the New York Film Academy before completing her education at the alternative film school Super16 in 2002. Christina has won several awards for her films and was in 2016 awarded as Best Director at the Beijing International Film Festival.

THE FILM

Moon Rider is a coming-of-age story about the bike rider Rasmus Quaade. The film follows young Rasmus' struggle to become a professional rider, a rough and winding road through hell and back. Shot on fragile Super8 and raw helmet-cam, it is a journey seen from the inside of a young man's head - it is a personal story entrusted to the spectator by Rasmus himself from his intimate diary. Rasmus has proven to have an extra ordinary talent for riding, but even if Rasmus' physical abilities are extra ordinary and build for cycling, his mind is build for thinking. His constant reflections about life and death becomes his biggest obstacle in reaching his goal of becoming a World Champion. In order to win, he has to empty his head completely, but how do you clear your head, when every thought is a step in the wrong direction? The film paints an honest and heartbreaking picture of the extreme and lonely life of a young championship rider.

INTO ETERNITY

2010 - 75 minutes - english

Director: Michael Madsen

THE FILM

Every day all over the world large amounts of high-radioactive nuclear waste are placed in temporary depots that are vulnerable to both natural- and man-made disasters. In Finland, the world's first permanent depot, Onkalo, is under construction. It is a giant system of underground tunnels, drilled directly into the ground rock. The deposit must last for at least 100,000 years, the period the waste will be fatal to all living. Once the storage space is filled up, it will be sealed to never be opened again. But can we secure it? How do we warn our descendants of the waste we have left? How do we prevent them from believing that they have found the mysterious tombs of our time, or hidden treasures? What languages or symbols will they understand? And will they respect our instructions? A thought provoking film on the future of energy use.

THE DIRECTOR

Michael Madsen, born 1971, is both director and concept artist, and has been involved in a series of art projects. The film of this evening, Into Eternity, received the CPH PIX Public Prize in 2009. VISITOR (TEST SCREENING) with Sebastian Cordes

VISITOR (testvisning)
Instruktør: Sebastian Cordes
Producer: Mette Mikkelsen
Producent: New Tales
DK. 2017. 73 min.

Om Filmen:
VISITOR.

Her søger vi publikums feedback.

Producer: Lise Saxtrup

THE FILM

What happens to the many unaccompanied refugee children that disappears from the Danish asylum centres year after year? In DREAMING OF DENMARK director Michael Graversen follows the fate of one of these young boys on the shady side of European society. Wasiullah lives like any other young man. He hangs out with his friends, cracks jokes, takes selfies, and flirts with girls. Denmark has become his home after spending three years in a children's asylum center, arriving alone as a young boy from Afghanistan. But as Wasi turns eighteen and his application for asylum is rejected, he is forced to leave the country. Fearing for his life in Afghanistan, Wasi flees to Italy, hoping to here obtain a residence permit that will allow him to return to Denmark. The director Michael Graversen has followed the young Wasi for many years. The close relationship between them has given Graversen a unique access to Wasi's life underground in Europe. For Wasi, the dream of one day returning to his friends and a safe future in Denmark has become the driving force for his survival. Wasi struggles to maintain life as a normal young man, but it is not easy when life is spent on the streets, waiting for a future that never gets started. Without a home and an identity, are you anyone at all? MAXIMUM PENALTY  (DEN HØJESTE STRAF)

1h 32min - 2000 - Danish/Russian (english subtitles)

Director: Tómas Gislason

Producer: Stine Boe Jensen

THE FILM

Maximum Penalty provides a fascinating and scary insight into a previously secretive chapter in the Soviet Union's dark history. Tómas Gislason has created an unusual and innovative documentary in both style and content. It is a historic journey back to the 1930's Stalinist regime, where Arne Munch-Petersen disappeared without a trace like thousands of other people. The current business minister and former head of the Danish Communist Party, Ole Sohn, is hunting in Moscow's old archives to clarify the mystery. Feelings are at stake in a movie, where the present is mirroring the past.

THE DIRECTOR

Tómas Gislason was admitted at the National Film School of Denmark as 18 years old, even though the age criterion was 21 years. He edited several of Lars von Trier's film school projects. The collaboration with Trier continued after the Film School, where Gislason functioned as both editor and scriptwriter on several films. In addition, he edited other instructors' playing and documentary films. Gislason received his first Robert Price already in his twenties.

DEMOCRATS with Camilla Nielsson
