MAXIMUM PENALTY (DEN HØJESTE STRAF)
1h 32min - 2000 - Danish/Russian (english subtitles)
Director: Tómas Gislason
Producer: Stine Boe Jensen
Maximum Penalty provides a fascinating and scary insight into a previously secretive chapter in the Soviet Union's dark history. Tómas Gislason has created an unusual and innovative documentary in both style and content. It is a historic journey back to the 1930's Stalinist regime, where Arne Munch-Petersen disappeared without a trace like thousands of other people. The current business minister and former head of the Danish Communist Party, Ole Sohn, is hunting in Moscow's old archives to clarify the mystery. Feelings are at stake in a movie, where the present is mirroring the past.
Tómas Gislason was admitted at the National Film School of Denmark as 18 years old, even though the age criterion was 21 years. He edited several of Lars von Trier's film school projects. The collaboration with Trier continued after the Film School, where Gislason functioned as both editor and scriptwriter on several films. In addition, he edited other instructors' playing and documentary films. Gislason received his first Robert Price already in his twenties.
